Back Home after crazy Brisbane times!

Journal Entry: Mon Dec 1, 2014, 6:15 AM

G'day everyone!

I am not back home after a crazy crazy weekend on the other side of Australia from me - BRISBANE!
I represented my state with pride in the Madman National Cosplay Championship, but alas, did not place (... this time *cue game face*). But it was an amazing experience - I have learnt so much, met some great people, and came back very VERY inspired.
And here is the reveal of what I have been working on for the past 5ish months - 'The White One'
AKA. Angela Blanc from Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji).
(I will link my skit on here once it is is uploaded but basically I did a quick change act from this:

I even splurged out and bought myself some pressies *shock horror* like T-shirts, jewellery and manga books.
I also finally got to meet a fellow Deviant I've wanted to meet for years for his gorgeous leatherwork - the one and only :iconrwolf1970:

Anyway, had so much fun but now I need sleep! Night all!

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 14, 2014, 5:44 PM

G'day guys,

So I have been a little quiet as of late. Lots of things going on - full time work, having a house/ being an adult, planning a wedding, trying to organise tiles/carpet/blinds... and cosplay!

Cosplay (along with spending time with Terry) has honestly been my happy place for the last few months, especially since I have been working on the most complicated Cosplay/ costume I have ever worked on before. I can not wait to shoot some stock in it for you guys in a couple of weeks. I hope you will like it.
I have been working on my entry for the Finals of the Madman National Cosplay Championship. I am pretty happy with the outcome and now it is all just about practice and having fun (aka. trying not to stress out which I am currently doing).

ANYWAY, if perchance you find yourself at Brisbane's Supanova (Brisanova) on Saturday 29th November 2014, please come to Cosplay Theatre between 11.20am and 1pm to cheer me on in the contest. And yes... I will be doing a skit. And if you want to grab a photo with me after, come find me. I should be easy to spot in the cosplay I will be competing in *snigger* (note, not the one down below).

But here is the line up for the Final - without a doubt it is going to be a GREAT show with these five skits/ cosplays.

Okay... I need to go an practice.
And not throw up due to nerves.

Halloween Feature

Journal Entry: Fri Oct 31, 2014, 6:29 AM

G'day everyone,

As much as I love dressing up, I don't go all out for Halloween. Never really been a thing - possibly because I'm an Aussie and it isn't really celebrated here to such a large extent as it is elsewhere.
However, I do love seeing all the great artwork that comes out this time of year - and I get extra excited when they feature stock of mine.

So as I love my watchers, I love the users of my stock, I love YOU - I wanted to share some of the amazing pieces using my stock that are a little... dark.

Portrait Set - Give me some ideas!

Journal Entry: Fri Oct 24, 2014, 6:46 AM

G'day everyone,

I am in the mood to do some another portrait set but I would like to throw it out to my amazing watchers...

What sort of stock portrait set would you like to see from me?

A theme would be great - but if you have a general request, I'll take that too.

Comment below - and you are awesome.

New stock soon!

G'day everyone,

I know I have been a bit MIA lately- sorry, cosplay has been currently taking most of my free time. But I did have the honour of writing an article for project educate :) "stock can cosplay" reviewing the similarities and differences between the two art types. I will put the link here soon :)

EDIT: Here it is:
Cosplay vs. Stock - For the love of CostumesStock & Resources
Do you have a geeky side?
Do you love getting dressed up in costumes (especially when they relate to a favourite movie, comic, game or anime)?
Do you like having your photo taken in costume?

And if you are reading this journal, you are most likely know what 'Stock' photography is also.
But hey, let's break it down (because these two categories have a lot in common, but also, have some big differences as well).

Cosplay is a derivative of two words, Costume Play - because that is exactly what it is. You dress up in a costume to look like a character from a popular culture reference such as movies, tv shows, games, anime, manga or comic books.

However, moving forward, there is a long weekend coming up this weekend and hopefully this virus I have now (I'm am writing this whilst I'm at the doctor's waiting for my appointment) would have passed. Then, I plan to do some stock- I'm trying to think of a theme of character for the type of costume I have planned- it looks a little like a friendly witch outfit... Or a stern old fashion head mistress- maybe from hogwarts?
what type of character would you like me to embody?

Cosplay is a derivative of two words, Costume Play - because that is exactly what it is. You dress up in a costume to look like a character from a popular culture reference such as movies, tv shows, games, anime, manga or comic books.
However, it is much, much more than that for a lot of cosplayers.
Many cosplayers pour countless hours, money, blood, sweat and tears into creating their costumes from scratch in an effort to look next to identical to the character they are trying to portray. These pieces are truly works of art; and cosplayers are always push the limits and creating new techniques to make these characters come to life.
And there is no denying it - these cosplayers make for some great photo opportunities!

Tasastock - skydancer-stock
(For the purposes of this article, 'stock' refers only to Deviantart stock images - not to be confused with stock images from commercial sites like shutterstock and istock)
Like cosplay, many stockers love getting into costumes (some of which are made by the wearer and have just had as many hours, money, blood etc. etc. as cosplayers). The difference is that stockers shoot stock photos with the aim of the image to be used in another artwork (ie. as a reference for a drawing, or in a photomanipulation etc.). They may look like a cosplay on first glance, but aren't necessarily based on any particular pop culture reference... mostly, it is just a theme.

So, how do we tell them apart?
She stock 3 by charligal-stock
There is no denying it, there is a massive cross over between cosplay and stock.
HOWEVER, it is important to remember that stock photos are designed to be used by other artists, and cosplay photos are the end product (they are NOT to be used as stock, unless permission is given by the cosplay artist)
On DA, it is relatively simple.

If the image is posted under 'Resources & Stock images', it is a stock image.
(AKA, go ahead, use it and follow the stocker's rules)
If the image is posted ANYWHERE else on the site, ie. 'Photography' or 'Artisian Craft', it is not a stock image.
(AKA, if you want to use the image, you need direct confirmation from the cosplayer that you can alter their uploaded image - and some may very well say no. Be ready for this and don't be offended.)

RANDOM: I'm a photographer and I see all these AMAZING costumes/ cosplayers - can I upload it as stock?
Hungarian Archer 13 by syccas-stock Luthien 6 by Jaymasee
syccas-stock - Jaymasee
If the model is not you, or someone who has given you expressed permission to use their image as stock (ie. they have signed a model release with the explanation of how their image might be used), you are not allowed to upload their image.
I mean, come on, imagine a shy young lady dressed in a beautiful fantasy garb. You snap their image, think the image is great and upload it as stock. Someone comes along, sees the image and puts it on a best seller novel front cover. Suddenly that shy girl's face is everywhere and she didn't even know the photo was taken or gave consent for her image to be used in that way.
Law suit anyone?
In short, appreciate the cosplay/ costume; respect the artist.

Overlap of cosplay and stock
There is no denying it, there is an overlap for sure between cosplay and stock - I mean, there are quite a few cosplayers who are also stockers. So let's break it down (and as we are geeks, let's do it in 'levels')

Level 1: The inspired
Daenerys10 by faestock Daenerys Targaryen 6 by Mirish
faestock - Mirish
This level is for those who love a character (in this case Daenerys from Game of Thrones) and do an inspired set from that character. It's not directly that character, it could be used as a different character in an artwork, but it still evokes the same emotions (and is a great way to express some geek loving)

Level 2: The reworker
Snow White Stock 2 by TrisStock Cupcake 1 by kirilee
TrisStock - kirilee
This level refers to those who take part of a cosplay (either the concept or physically part of the costume), and mix it around with other elements. For example here we see a slightly more pin up version of snow white, and the skirt used of a anime based cosplay mixed with a different bodice.
These allow for a new character to emerge, while still embracing roots from the original character.

Level 3: The cosplay stock
Megara Historical cosplay by Elisa-Erian Jedi Stock III by PhelanDavion
Elisa-Erian - PhelanDavion
These images are where cosplay and stock meet and have a drink together - recognizable characters from popular culture, uploaded and available for use as stock images. Just be aware though, if you do upload this type of stock, you should give credit to the original character.

So go forth cosplayers and stockers alike! Embrace your inner geek!

Madman Videos and Features

Journal Entry: Fri Jul 18, 2014, 7:21 PM

G'day everyone!

As previously mentioned, I won the Perth heat for the Madman National Cosplay Championships - whcih means in November I will be representing the state in the finals. I am currently working on an epic cosplay to suit that - it is taking pretty much all of my free time (I'm not kidding) because I want to enter something that I am proud of and has pushed me to the brink of what I think I can do - and then a few steps more.

I'm not going to say much about my final entry, except that the code name is "The White One", and it has a lot of individual pieces and detail. It's a little like figuring out a puzzle - especially since I want the cosplay to be able to do a few things.

Anyway, I did promise you videos from my preliminary heat, so here they are!

The Highlights

The Performance
(Mine starts at about 5:24 mark)

So... now to create something "big" (why did I say that?!)

Senior Status

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 13, 2014, 5:31 AM

So this happened...

Seniority Announcement - July 2014
This article marks the latest additions to the dizzy height of Senior members in our community. With just over 1000 deviants holding the highly saught after Senior Member accolade -- it's clearly a moment that deserves recognition.
So what does it take to become a Senior? That's a question many have asked and have never really been able to get a straight answer on. Some have gained Seniority as a thank you for their time spent as a Volunteer, or to recognise their contribution to a particular project or collaborative action. Some have gained Seniority because of their community spirit, providing help and assistance to many other deviants and taking time out to promote the work of others in the community.
Some people have received Seniority because of their artistic endevours, having a positive influence on their peers by sharing resources, providing constructive criticism and by being a voice that stands out

I was certainly not expecting it - thank you to Elandria and anyone else that nominated me to receive such an amazing honour.

Looks like I need my walking stick!

In other news, I am super busy at the moment between full time work, making an EPIC cosplay (and trust me, this is the most challenging project I've ever tackled), organising a wedding, doing normal house stuff... and trying not to get sick *cough**cough* - not succeeding on the last one :(

Not sure when the next change I will get to do stock - I am hoping to at least do some portrait shots in the near future. Any ideas?

Feeling a little over the moon at the moment...

Journal Entry: Sat Jun 21, 2014, 7:25 AM

G'day everyone!

I thought I would share my good news with you.

Today I entered into the Western Australian Heats for the Madman National Cosplay Championships - there were a total of 7 entrants; the most from any state and the most WA has ever had.

The competition was fierce and I entered with my Lady Elizabeth Midford cosplay, doing a skit about 4 tips for capturing the heart of a prospective love interest (of course they were completely unhelpful).

I mean come on, does she look like a character you should take seriously? :P

Anyway.... I WON!

I was not expecting it at all. It was a massive surprise - they caught it on video so I'm sure my reaction will be available on youtube in a couple of days.
In short, it was awesome. This was the first major cosplay contest that I've entered - so to WIN was amazing.

So what does that mean?
Well, I now will be competing (with a whole new character, costume and skit) in the finals in November... In Brisbane! My airfares, accommodation and entry to the entire event is paid for. *squee - I've never seen Queensland before*
I am super excited (and nervous!) to be competing and cosplaying with the best in Australia, especially when I am so new to all this. But I am ready for the challenge to bring something EPIC to the table.

I will let you guys know when the skit is up on youtube... and you can always like my facebook page ^_^
*cough*… *cough*

Just wanted to share my good/ exciting news!

New Cosplay Facebook Page

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 17, 2014, 4:01 AM

G'day everyone,

Just a heads up that I have created a new facebook page for my cosplays. I will still be uploading them on here as stock, but I will be uploading WIPs there and showing any commissions I do on there too. (Yes, I am opening up the gates for commissions - a scary gate - but I figure if something is too complicated and I don't feel comfortable that I will be able to achieve it, I can tell the person in advance) :)

Please check it out and like!…

Much love!

Latest happenings...

Journal Entry: Mon Jun 9, 2014, 4:01 AM

G'day everyone,

Here is a little bit of an update at where I am.

I got to start playing around with my new lens. It is so pretty! And the photos are so SO clear.

I have uploaded all the drawing reference photos, which was a great experience. As most of you know, I am all about the costume - so it was good to strip back and focus on poses and expressions. (And wearing something skin tight does scare the crap out of me - so I'm glad I faced that fear) - I got mixed results; the trolls came out to play just as much as the amazing artists. I tend to focus on the latter ^_^

I've also started uploaded the redo of the Greek queen - VERY happy how they turned out. Still more to edit and upload so stay tunes.

ALSO, side note, if you are looking for a specific pose with a costume that I'm currently in the process of uploading, please send me a note. I might have a suitable pose, but might not upload it unless I have a reason to.
Just please, don't abuse this generosity.

So what else have I been up to?
Well, I've been working on a whole lot of cosplays because recently (especially with Supanova coming up at the end of the month), I have been really enjoying sewing.

On top of the Elizabeth Midford cosplay, I have been making a few others:

Rapunzel (Tangled) - for me

(And I couldn't help but to also try it on)
10414540 10152551511676614 551530468109915506 by kirilee

The Shae dress was really easy to make, and I am considering making a tutorial on how to make it. Would anyone be interested in that?
The design is used for a few different characters in Game of Thrones like Ros as well, and has a few different variations.

So yes, that is me. :)

Stay awesome everyone.

G'day everyone,

Today I want to share with you the number 28. 28 is a great number. It is a great number, because that is how many amazing people pledged and donated to my pozible campaign - making it a success and allowing me to purchase a new lens - a piece of equipment which will help me take my stock to the next level and create an even better resource for the deviantart community to access.

To these 28 people, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I am so completely humbled by your generosity. Some of you even putting in some very substantial amounts. At times, I even started crying, I couldn't believe that there were some amazing people out there - whom I had never ever actually met in person - who would be so generous towards me.
Thank you.

And now, the deviants who are responsible for giving me this opportunity to take my stock to the next level.

48 Hours Left - GOAL REACHED!

Journal Entry: Fri May 16, 2014, 7:05 PM

G'day everyone,

First off, a massive thank you to every person who pledged money towards this campaign. Thank you all so very much for helping me reach my goal. I have been borderline breaking into tears of joy all morning since I got the news. I have messaged Matt who is selling the lens and told him also. By the end of next week, I should hopefully have the brand new lens in my hands.

If you would still like to pledge, it will not go wasted! Any extra money raised will be put into a safe savings account to purchase a new camera base or new lighting. (But, I am super happy right now about the lens :P)

The campaign will still run it's course and will finish in 48ish hours.

I will be contact everyone who pledged physical rewards soon if I need any clarification of what they would like, and will post the thank you journal on Tuesday... and will then after be posting journals for the solo journal rewards over the next 2 weeks-ish.

Thank you all. I feel so humbled.

Thank you.

58 HOURS LEFT (and counting...)! PLEASE HELP!

Journal Entry: Thu May 15, 2014, 6:41 AM

G'day everyone!

The end is near! Three days left to get your pledges in - think of it as a gamble if you like :) If the goal is not reach, not a cent from anyone is given. Are you ready to place your bet? ;)

For those who don't like to bet, don't think of it as a gamble! It is a pledge of support.

Either way you look at it - please pledge today.

Need more info?
In short, I am trying to improve my stock by purchasing a really decent lens for my camera. However, because of some other financial pressures (mainly a new house and a wedding), I can't afford to buy the lens all on my own - and I have organised for a really good deal to get this lens second hand... but I have until the end of the campaign to agree.

EDIT 3: SOOOO CLOSE! 90% funded!!! A total of $766 pledged!!! Only $84 left!!! Please help!!!

EDIT 2: HOLY MOLLY! I wokeup this morning to see we are at 87% funding - $746 in pledges!!! Only $104 off reaching the goal! We are SOOOO close, please help me cross that finishing line with a bang!

EDIT: WOW! Now we are at 83% funded - $711 pledges, $139 left to raise! Come on! Help me cross this finishing line!

The campaign is currently 71% funding - that equates to an AMAZING $611 pledged with 23 amazing people showing their support already. This means that we still have at least $239 to raise before the end - and the end is near. Please pledge.

One week left! Please help me!

UPDATE! Pozible Campaign - Paypal now working!

Journal Entry: Thu May 8, 2014, 3:03 AM

UPDATE: 9 DAYS LEFT! AND - last night I spoke to a pozible technical specialist and got paypal activated! So, if you would like to pledge via paypal and not CC - it is NOW POSSIBLE! (or... pozible ;))

G'day everyone!

We have reach the half way mark of the pozible campaign set time period... but just shy of half way for the goal.

An amazing 43% has been pledged so far.
Thank you to all the AMAZING deviants who have shown their support to date.

There really are no words how grateful I am, and humbled when I see the pledges come in. Very single one of you who have pledged have left a mark in my heart. My stock is for you. I am so humbled because you realise how much this lens would mean to me. I just want to create amazing, top quality stock for artists like yourself to use.

For those of you still wondering if you should pledge, a friend of mine said it like this (and I kind of like it):

Friend: This pozible campaign is like that Hare Krishna restaurant.
Me: Say what?
Friend: Well, you "customers" use your stock for free although there are plenty of other stock artists and websites which cost money to use the image. Just like the restaurant - there is no set charge for the food - and plenty of other restaurants which have fixed costs. However, at the end, you ask for a donation or how much you think the goods/ service was worth.

Hmmm... food for thought? :)

So, moral of the story - please help me reach my goal.
Remember, this crowd funding is all or nothing. If I don't reach the goal in the next 11 days, none of the funding will reach me or help me get the new lens :(

Here's the link again ;) :…
