Where dat stock Kirilee?

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 9, 2014, 3:27 AM

G'day everyone!

Sorry I've been a bit MIA lately. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like it will be ending any time soon I'm afraid. But... now that I am officially living in my own house with Terry means that stock will be even more awesome when I get back around to it... still unpacking and sorting through 26 and 30 years of "stuff".

BUT... it does mean that Terry and I will be doing some shoots together - any particular themes that you would like to see?

And... as a teaser, I will be doing a shoot hopefully soon utilising part of my latest cosplay creation:

I'm think of calling the series "Cupcake" :P

Nothing like POOF!

So yes... requests. Ideas. Throw them at me.

New house, INTERNET + 5 years bonus images

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 27, 2014, 4:50 AM

G'day everyone,

Good news! After 4 weeks of much blood, sweat and tears (literally), Terry and I are in our new house! Huzzah! It may not have tiles, carpets or even most blinds - but it is home (complete with Bobby the Pink and Grey - that's a parrot for you non-aussies :)).
We also have internet, so now I can get back in touch with all you lovely people.

Also, last Monday was actually my 5 year anniversary of doing stock (with my 5 year anniversary with Terry coming up next week ;)). So, I have a few more bonus images to edit and upload, but I thought you might like a preview from the bonus images coming your way from the 'Red' series...
Red BONUS 51 by kirilee

Enjoy and stay posted!

Oh and side note - I am SUPER excited. I am going to Comic Con Perth this weekend which means I get to have an awesome time cosplaying in my tardis dress, possibly hanging out with faestock for a bit, AND *tries not to hyperventilate* have breakfast with Amanda Tapping!!!! It still hasn't hit me fully that I am going to meet my childhood hero - someone that has inspired me for a good 2/3s of my life.

Ciao for now!

5 years of doing stock

Journal Entry: Sun Mar 2, 2014, 6:20 AM

G'day everyone,

March this year marks 5 years of doing stock, and 5 years of posting the images for artists to use here on DeviantArt.
Wow! What a crazy time! I have had some wonderful experiences, and met some amazing people (online and then also in real life - shout out to faestock, charligal-stock and Tasastock). And I don't plan on stopping any time soon. This is well and truly my hobby, and there is nothing that brings me greater joy than seeing artwork where me stock has been used, either as a digital resource, reference or inspiration. I live for it :)

So to everyone reading this, whether you are a fellow stocker, an artist or someone just looking for inspiration, thank you.

To show you have far I've come as a stocker... perhaps I should share a photo from my first shoot and my latest shoot:

To celebrate 5 years of stockage, I will be releasing some bonus images which are previously unseen.
Here is a few from my Forest Queen series:

Are there any series that you hope to see more of? (I can't promise anything - I have deleted quite a few except for what has been uploaded :P)

I have a HOUSE (and other awesome bits)

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 28, 2014, 5:32 PM

G'day everyone!

Yesterday was truly and awesome day for me (and I had to share). Good things comes in threes right? Well it did for me!

1. I wore a shirt to work that I haven't fitted into for 5 and half years. It is a size 10 (US size 8). HUZZAH!

2. It was announced finally! I am going to be on the front of the new e-book by Kami Garcia. Thanks very much to Phatpuppyart-Studios ! So epically awesome. Check it out!
Dark Futures by Phatpuppyart-Studios

3. (and probably the most exciting) TERRY AND I GOT KEYS TO OUR HOUSE! It has been a long process but we finally have keys :) Check it out!

Now I must run - I have an appointment to get contacts (YAY!) and then we have a whole lot of prep to do before painting next weekend!

Plus... Tardis dress shoot with the ever talented Matt on Monday! YAY!

Epic Dress - Cosplay Challenge 'Tardis' Dress

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 21, 2014, 6:33 AM

G'day everyone!

It is DONE! I have completed my T.A.R.D.I.S. 1950s inspired dress!
1965010 10152306900441614 1230550467 N by kirilee
(Sorry for the quality of photo - was using my iphone at night)

I should also mention that the hat does also light up when a LED light is turned on in it (though, no flashing :().
But golly gosh, I am super happy. This was my first (conscious) cosplay I have done (my first sort of one was Teyla from Stargate Atlantis but I didn't know I was cosplaying). As you might have guessed, I am a big Doctor Who fan and I wanted to do something that was a bit flexible with creativity so I decided to do sexy... I mean, the Tardis with a 1950s twist because I noticed that in the newer series, they are always trying to get to the 1950s but the Tardis takes them somewhere else. Besides, the Tardis is a lady. The Doctor needs to treat her right.

I will be completeing this look with make up, big-ish hair, pearl necklace and earrings, white gloves with pearls and of course stockings and shoes.

It look me approximately 27 hours to make, with the most amount of time being spent on the windows for a single "item". There are four panels on the dress and I'm telling you... evil. But they look great on.

Cost wise, actually not too much as all the material was given to me (satin, lining and tulle) by a seamstress who was going to just throw it away (YAY for staying green) so the only things I bought was the zip, boning, elastic and the police box signs... so all up, maybe $30ish. Not bad for a full cosplay.

I am looking forward to shooting some proper shots in this. Some will be uploaded as cosplay photos but will still be available for stock if you so want to use it. :)

I will be wearing this outfit to OZ Comic Con Perth at the end of March. If any of you guys/ gals live in Perth and are coming along, please come and say hi. I will be easy to find and I would LOVE to meet other deviants - ESPECIALLY if there are any watchers out there. :)

YAY! So excited!

- Kirilee

G'day everyone,

I just wanted to do a quick shout out to all the stockers out there (are artists who want to give it a shot).
There are currently 3 contests that are going on that YOU can get your stock on for!

'Create a Character Stock Contest' - jademacalla
Stock Photo Contest - The Winning Entries!!Comrades, I cannot tell you how glad I am that the entire cast of the Green Cat Cabaret was involved in judging this contest, because it was TOUGH. All the entries were fantastic. The votes have been tabulated, though, so without further ado, the winning entries...

Ladies and Gents, this contest is fantastically open. The idea is to create a character who is either a performer, staff member and patron of 'The Green Cat Club'. The rules are... ANYTHING GOES! It doesn't matter what time period, what planet, what job - you just need to create some sort of character. Come on people - you can't have much more license for creativity than that!
I have been lucky enough to be able to enter into this one with my character 'Sissy'.

'Through the Mirror Stock Challenge' - charligal-stock
CONTEST EXTENDED A WEEK*EDIT* Woohoo!! We have some entries!!
Hello everyone!! It's been a while since I last held a stock challenge for stock artists but in the spirit of the new year here you go.
What if a mirror isn't all it seems. What if your reflection wants to keep you on your side? What if you are able to climb through a mirror but your reflection keeps standing in front of you, blocking your way? You try to touch the mirror without your reflection touching the same place. Maybe the cold surface isn't the mirror you're touching, but the cold flesh of your doppelganger, pushing back, keeping you on your side.
The theme is 'Through the Mirror'

This is great if you like a bit more direction.
It plays with the idea of what is trapped behind the mirror when you look into it.
It is certainly has the capacity to have your deepest darkest fears brought to the surface... so what are you waiting for? GET CRACKING!

Art Creation: Fantasy and Science Fiction
Artists, your task is to create a fantasy or a science fiction themed piece. Bu

Did someone say Sci-Fi and Fantasy?!?! There is nothing I love more.
But alas, I am a judge for this one - and lets face it, I've got a fair amount of sci-fi and fantasy stock already in my gallery :P
This one is pretty open as well. If it falls under either fantasy or sci-fi, even a little bit - SUBMIT IT! DO IT!

Semi-Epic Dress Cosplay Challenge: Tardis

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 11, 2014, 6:31 AM

The base of the dress is done! Very happy with it so far:
1901180 10152288406336614 1262930878 N by kirilee

G'day all,

It seems like it is all go go go here! Not much longer until hand over for the house and then painting and then moving in! Which is why, in my "spare" time at the moment (aka. when I'm not packing, or planning wedding stuff, or picking out colours of walls, or you know - working full time or sleeping) I am TRYING to make my cosplay outfit for Perth Oz Comic-Con which is at the end of March. Probably not the best time to be doing it.

BUT I thought I better try and get it done now when I am still at home... because once hand over happens, I'm really not going to have the time (and moving in will take us up to the end of March!).

So on the weekend, I cut out the pieces to the dress (already made the petticoat), and tonight I started to sew it all together. As I'm excited, I thought it best to share it with you all - managed to get the bulk of the base done this evening. I plan on putting in the zipper and hemming the skirt tomorrow night. Then it is only a matter of creating a pocket, sewing on the signs and making a mini top hat for the light.
About 4-6  more days/ night's work I think.

So now my question to you guys...

Do/ have you cosplay? If so, what characters have you done?

Stock Copyright - Shutterstock, iStock vs. DA

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 3, 2014, 4:42 AM

First and foremost, I am not a lawyer. This journal contains my personal understanding of copyright law, terms and conditions for the mentioned websites as it relates to the stock and the artistic community here on DeviantArt (DA).
However, please feel free to share this journal.

Light Reading 2 by Elandria Light Reading 4 by Elandria Antique Books 1 by DamselStock

Recently, one of DA’s most active and respected stock users came under fire for using off site (meaning outside DA) stocks in her work. As a “stocker”, I was surprised to hear of this - It was my understanding that this was common practice for artists to do.

It prompted me to look into the matter and dust off the little bit of arts law I studied whilst doing my post grad in Arts Management. (And I will save you the definition of IP law and the fact that copyright stays in effect for about 150 years, give or take a few. If you want to read a bit more about the basics in easy to understand lingo, try DA’s own copyright policy:…)

For the purpose of this journal, I will be juxtaposing DA’s stock community to that of the likes of Shutterstock and iStock - probably the web’s two largest stock sites.

The first thing that is VERY clear is that these sites operate differently to DA and are built for a different primary purpose.
DA was created to “entertain, inspire, and empower the artist in all of us... (it) is a platform that allows emerging and established artists to exhibit, promote, and share their works within a peer community dedicated to the arts.” (DeviantArt - “About Us” page).
Where iStock defines stock photos (the only thing they deal in) as “...ready-made images that are licensable for use in your advertising or promotional materials to illustrate specific things, concepts or ideas.

So what does that mean for the stock artist and what are the risks they face?
401 - reading by WolfcatStock Reading by faestock Aaron Reading I by IQuitCountingStock
I can only speak from personal experience, but I know that I post only on DA because I purely create stock to service the needs of the artistic community. I am not in this for commercial gain (please note, that I recognise that some stockers use the premium content and exclusive stocks to “charge” for their stock - however, it is my understand that the majority of those who do this use the most of the funds raised to either go back into their stock photography or supplement their income).
This is what I like the call the “DA stock” mentality. We are creative people, who like to inspire and support other creative people.
Some of you, like myself, have probably been approached by people wishing to use your images as they are, and without or minimal modification. This is because sites like ShutterStock and iStock set that general definition of what a stock photo is. And the good news is, DA is very flexible by allowing artists to define their copyright terms when posting on the site.

However, it is not all fun and games. This does mean however that people may not be as kind and ask for your permission before using your image. Especially because they consider it to be “free” and have the mentality of “stock” that they know from outside sites. Be aware of this, keep a look out for your image (and others), and report. Your image is copyrighted, and you have your own terms and conditions which others are accountable for (ie. so if you write as one of your rules, “My stock photos are only to be used in artistic works” then it will be hard for someone use your photo as it is in an advertisement for leg hair removal and call it an artistic work. It’s an advertisement smart ass.)

So what does this all mean if I’m an artist who uses stock?
Drawing Perspective by SenshiStock 627 - laptop by WolfcatStock Painting Nude by Felixdeon
DA, all in all, is pretty simple. Although all stockers will have their own terms/rules, the majority will be similar (however, if they specifically say “no commercial use” or something to that effect, don’t use it if you plan to sell the finished product on as a poster or as a book cover etc).

It gets a bit more complicated with outside stock websites. Both ShutterStock and iStock give a long list of what you can use the stock off their sites for. They include but aren’t limited to:
- On websites
- In print and digital media
- Product packaging and software including magazines, newspapers, books, prints, posters, e-books, advertising collateral, catalogues, brochures, promotional greeting cards/ postcards, letterhead, business cards, product labels, CD and DVD cover art, applications (including mobile "apps"), and opt-in e-mail marketing
- Incorporated into film, video, multimedia presentations
- Advertising and promotional projects for broadcast, public performance, commercials or streaming
- For decorative purposes solely for your own personal, non-commercial use.

However, both have some pretty stiff rules about creating “derivative” images.
iStock (in the “Content License Agreement”) states:
“ may not use the Content in products for resale, license or other distribution (including posting online), unless... if the original Content has been fundamentally modified or transformed sufficiently that it constitutes an original work entitling the author or artist to copyright protection under applicable law, and where the primary value of such transformed or derivative work is not recognizable as the Content… For example, you cannot superficially modify the Content, print it on a t-shirt, mug, poster, template or other item, and sell it to others for consumption, reproduction or re-sale. These uses will not be permitted as or constitute Permitted Derivative Works... Any use of the Content that is not a Permitted Use shall constitute infringement of copyright.
In short, if you use photos from iStock in an artwork, you better be sure that it is not recognisable as that original image if you want to claim it as your own work. How recognisable? Unfortunately, that part is subjective - and will be determined by a judge if you ever went to court.

ShutterStock states in their terms of service:
Shutterstock hereby grants you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, worldwide, perpetual, right to use, modify, and reproduce Images...
In the event that you create a derivative work based on or incorporating one or more Images, all rights in and to such Images shall continue to be owned by Shutterstock or its Contributor(s).
Meaning, Shutterstock and the original photo contributor/s hold part of the copyright on your image.

Where does that leave me as an artist?
Angry by BokoGreat-STOCK Face by faestock Dragon Tamer 8 by kirilee
You can use images from Shutterstock and iStock in your artwork. But it is not as simple as purchasing the initial image and thinking you have free rein over it.
Also, if you use the image in large print runs, you will need to look at purchasing a special extended/ enhanced license, as iStock will normally only allow a print run/ distribution of up to 500, 000 and Shutterstock up to 250, 000. These licenses mean you will be able to have unlimited amount of copies made.

Also, both sites have “Editorial Use Only” images. Be careful with these. These are images that can not be used under any circumstance to make money (ie. artwork to be sold as prints, book covers, posters etc.). However, if you just want to use it in an art piece and upload - go ahead. Knock yourself out.

Oh sweet mother of candy... should I curl up into a ball and rock myself to sleep?

Let’s not sweat it too much. Copyright law is one of the most subjective laws out there. There is no white and black to this - it is a whole range of the colour grey.
And if anyone threatens you with legal action, there are three key defences and exceptions you can use. They are:

- Implied Consent: If the original contributor has said or written that they love seeing what people create with their images, or have allowed other pieces of their work to be used in a similar situation, this is implied consent. It is a good defence as if someone overtly gives you or implies permission, then you’ve basically got permission to do it.

- Not for Commercial Use: It is basically an exception rather than a defence. If you are not making money off it, you’re in the clear (as long as you credit).

- Fair use: This one is the real subjective defence. It takes into account the following:
-- Amount and Substantiality (how much did you take and use to create your artwork?)
-- Commercial / Non Commercial (See above - and if it is commercial, to what degree?)
-- Nature of the copyrighted work (The more transformative it is, the better. Ie. A stock photo being used as a drawing reference is more transformative that a stock image being modified and placed in a photomanipulation with very few other changes.)
-- Effect on potential market (Will you take away any potential customers who would have otherwise used the original image? If so, how many?)

However remember that with stock, you always need to credit the source. That is a pretty stock standard rule (pun intended).

If you would like a to see a really good presentation about copyright and IP law, I highly recommend that you sit down for 55 minutes, and watch Joshua S. Walker’s talk at Comic Con 2012. He is the adviser and chief of DA, and a lawyer and professor. It is very informative, easy to understand and at times, quite funny.

I sincerely hope that this has helped some people to understand what a “stock image” might mean on DA verses other stock websites, and that copyright is something you need to be aware of - whether you are a stocker or a visual artist.

I would like to thank all the DA stock images used in this journal entry to lighten it up a bit. I hope you don’t mind me using the images in a bit of a shutterstock version of “stock use”. :)

Congratulations SenshiStock (Sakky)!

G'day all!

I just wanted to give a quick shout out to the one, the only, the AMAZING SenshiStock

Congratulations for winning the Deviousness Award for Feb 2014.

Your continual contribution to this site has been outstanding - inspiring and helping artists from all corners of the globe with top of the range reference drawings (and even going so far as to self publish a book of poses for artists to use).

Congratulations again Sakky - you are truly awesome.

Where is Kirilee now?

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 18, 2014, 6:36 AM

G'day everyone,

I am not sure how much stock I'll be able to do over the next couple of weeks as they will be SUPER busy in real life.

If you have been reading some of my journals, you will know that I have been for the last year and a half, building a house with my fiancé Terry. It is to be awesome - Nice big light filled living room (lots of space for the backdrop and soft box lights), a room dedicated to my sewing and costume storage, and a fiancé willing (mostly) to do stock with me (COUPLE STOCK BABY!).

HOWEVER, we are approaching the final moments of living in separate houses and things are starting to become full on in regards to preparation. Next week for the long weekend, we are heading down south to get the first lot of boxes out of storage. Then it is packing both of our stuff up from each house, and with hand over/keys after an inspection or two, we have a week or two of painting and moving stuff it. Clean up, well wishing and getting on top of things. Not to mention, I have no idea how long it will take to get proper internet up and running in the new house.

In short, I am not sure how long it will be before I upload some new stock (though I REALLY want to do a small stock shoot for Nichelle's 'Through the Mirror' stock challenge: Click here to check it out).
However, I am on here is some form every day and I LOVE seeing what you guys are creating. Please, keep it going.

Also, I will ask for your requests for some couple stock goodness in the next coming months. Because I get to work with this man... and live with him :)

Just wanted to let you just know. :)

Journal Entry: Wed Jan 15, 2014, 6:51 AM

Elandria! You evil woman!!!! (But who am I kidding, I still love you )

The Rules

1. You must post these rules.
2. Each person has to share 10 things about themselves.
3. Answer the 10 questions asked to you and invent 10 questions the people you tag will have to answer.
4. Choose the 10 people and put them on your journal.
5. Go to their page to inform them they are tagged.
6. Not something like "You are tagged if you read that."
7. You have to legitimately tag 10 people.
8. No tag-backs.
9. You can't say you don't do tags.

The Questions

1. If you could have the abilities of any 1 person (alive or dead) for 24 hours, who would it be and why?
The marketing manager of Andre Reiu. My reason being, the man (although talented) is not the best violinist in the world. There is not much special about him at all. However, he has one amazing attribute - his marketing manager. Somehow they turned a mediocre CLASSICAL musician who is past his prime into a "rock" star. I would love to know HOW.

2. If you could have any super power, what would it be and why?
The ability to change fate. That way, in any case, you will always come out on top :)

3. If we had the technology available right now to visit any other world in the solar system - but it takes 50 years to get there, would you venture forth or would you stay on Earth?
I would stay on Earth. 50 years would put me at 76, and I would miss my entire life. No thanks, I value a life to live rather than a glimpse at something awesome for a moment.

4. What artistic skill do you most admire in others?
Amazing sewing skills and attention to detail. I am often drooling over some amazing pieces of costumes.

5. What artistic skill would you dedicate yourself to being excellent at achieving?
Stock with expression and character.

6. What is one of the main reasons you use DA to showcase your art?
The main reason is because I love the arts and my ego really likes the idea of being a type of muse. What a flattering idea.
Secretly, it has been my wish since I started stock nearly 5 years ago that one day my work would be featured on a hard copy book cover - being a bit of a book worm. It is one of the reasons that got me going and then so many more reasons kind of came up too - other art forms using my stock/ reference, self-confidence building, learning about photography, pushing my sewing skills and creating costumes, meeting some amazing people... the list continues to grow as my "main" reasons I am still on DA doing my thing.... whatever that thing may be.

7. If you could be a character in any book or movie, who would it be and why?
Keladry from Protector of the Small series by Tamora Pierce. (wow, that was fast to answer)
She is my favourite character of all time - similar to me in a number of ways, she faces her battles with grace, composure (mostly) and a sword in her hand (or glaive). Love her.

8. Do opposites really attract?
YES! My fiance and I are quite opposite in many regards - he likes the gym, I would rather sleep in. I like acting and theatre, he doesn't like the limelight. In short, it makes life interesting.

9. Pie, or cake?
Cake. Always cake.

10. Left sock, or right sock?

New Questions

1. You are being hunted. You must change your identity. What name do you chose for yourself?

2. You must also leave the country and start a new life in another. What country do you go to?

3. To blend in, what pet do you get?

4. Would you rather - shave your hair, wax off your eyebrows or get a large tattoo over your entire back?

5. What has been the most life threatening experience you have had in your life to date?

6. What is your weapon of choice?

7. Would you rather be a musketeer, a knight or cowboy/girl?

8. What is you proudest accomplishment to date?

9. Aside from family members, who has inspired you the most in your life?

10. Do you believe stock is an artform?

Journal Entry: Sat Jan 4, 2014, 4:47 AM

G'day everyone!

Just wanted to wish you all a very happy new year. 4 days into 2014 and I'm feeling like it is going to be a good year. On Monday I start my new job, so for the past week or so whilst relaxing on holiday with Terry, I have been sewing and shooting stock (because who knows when I'll get time to do another shoot... or be so inspired :P)

I started with my Cecelia dress (a semi-epic dress as I only made the underskirt).... and did some stock.

I then started working on my Tardis Cosplay dress. However, I am not yet ready to make the main dress yet - that's going to happen in a month or two :) But I did make the underskirt (well, another one). Here is a preview of that stock in case you missed it:

I think I will be going with the name of Cecelia for this one after some great suggestions!

Now... as the end is near, I thought I would share with you all some of my personal favourite uses of the year!

(semi) Epic Dress - It has begun...

Journal Entry: Sun Dec 29, 2013, 6:17 AM

G'day everyone,

I hope everyone's Christmas/ festive season has been a treat! And the new year is just around the corner - WHOOT! Very excited about starting 2014... 'tis is a year to be awesome.

I am currently working on two (semi) epic dresses. And I have started sewing the first today. This is purely a stock shoot dress. It is somewhat victorian... somewhat sci-fi apparently. *shrug* I'm not sure. Not even sure what to call it (looking for idea here people :P)

BUT I thought I would share my progress so far. Remember this is what I started with...
Untitled by kirilee

I cut and dyed material. I decided to change the petticoat to one with a train.
Today I made the bustle pillow (SO easy to make!):
1488059 10152182239911614 957616260 N by kirilee

AND sewed together the underskirt:
946963 10152182239981614 1617747054 N by kirilee

It's long... but that is good because tomorrow I am going to bustle it up.

And in true Kirilee fashion, I couldn't wait... so I put all the elements together and did a bit of a mock up before sewing it all tomorrow (maybe finish it in 2-3 days?). What cha think (don't mind the crude bustling...)?

I hope that gives you a bit of an idea where I am heading with this... need a name. Need a character. Help?

2013, a Year in Review

Journal Entry: Sat Dec 21, 2013, 7:27 PM

G'day everyone,

As this year comes to a close, I thought it might be nice to do a journal about what has happened in the last 12 months. Especially since this year has been one of the most important in my life to date. (Please note, this is a long one... but it has LOTS of pictures :P)

We started the year with the inspiration stock contest is FULL SWING! The idea was to take another person's stock, and be inspired by it to make your own version of it. There were two categories - beginner and advanced. The winners were:
Advanced - Lilianne stock 3 by Kuoma-stock (Kuoma-stock) inspired by Pirates - Captain Ebony Black Pack 7 by mizzd-stock (mizzd-stock)
Beginner - A Gentleman's Last Act 38 by Null-Entity (Null-Entity) inspired by stock_charades_5 see notes by jademacalla (jademacalla)

There were so many entries, and it was SO great to see the stock community really getting involved with it :)

In other stock news, I was busy working on my Forrest Queen Epic Dress for most of the month, though I did still get to do a portrait series:

So, the second month of the year hit. And I completed my Forrest Queen outfit. WEE!

Forest Queen 2 by kirilee Forest Queen 22 by kirilee Forest Queen 35 by kirilee
I don't think it was any secret - I LOVED this series. It was a costume of volume, lots of light material, a labour of love, and I got to shoot this series with my dear mate Matt.
In the real world, things were turning from bad to worse at my job. After almost having a complete mental break down at the end of the year before, I felt like I was heading back to that place. But I had signed on for a house to be built with my partner Terry so I couldn't see a way out.

I won a DD!!!

It was a boost of confidence I really needed at that moment in time. Thank you to KalosysArt and Elandria for the suggestion and feature.

I also started the "Forest Queen Art Contest".

March was also the month that I finally got to meet, play around with, eat goat's cheese and host the AMAZING Tasastock. She came over from Sydney just before she headed home to the UK... and I had her in my HOUSE! MUH HA HA HA!
Needless to say, we shot stock and had such a great time together for the couple of days we were together. It did include feeding and patting kangaroos and going to a medieval festival (I even put her in a white and PINK dress *insert evil laugh*).

This contest was SOOOO hard because SO many of the entries were fantastic. So... kudos!

I also wrote my first tutorial about how to turn soda can tabs into chainmaille:

To this date, this has been my most popular deviation with well over 1000 favourites (unheard of for me).

May was possibly to worst month of the year for me personally. My ego, energy and health were all shattered by my job at the time. I felt that I was being overworked, under appreciated, bullied by the CEO and not paid nearly enough for what I was putting in. I tried to continue to give myself an artistic outlet through stock and sewing (since I couldn't do theatre because it ate up too much time outside of "work hours" that I had to spend at work doing events or covering for other staff members). But at the end of the month, the CEO landed on my front door step (from the other side of Australia) and said that they were "ending my contract". I didn't cry, as she expected me to. I laughed. And laughed. And laughed. I found it hard to stop laughing in her face. I think I may have scared her.
I looked straight into her eyes, this bully, this terrible excuse for a human being, and said "give me one thing that I did wrong". And she couldn't. Because I didn't do anything wrong. I simply was not a "yes" girl like all the other mindless workers who worked for the organisation and were in fear of her. I told things are they were, and perhaps she found that confronting and aggressive. I call it telling it as it is and having a mind of your own.
So, I left - but feeling better strangely than I had in months. From that moment I truly realised how powerful I was in that I just proved to myself, that NOBODY was ever going to tell me what I was worth or bully me ever again. I also realised, I was never going to let myself get to that state of being so physically sick from stress and anxiety that I was in so much pain - at times it hurt to move. I had also gained a fair amount of weight during that time.

I did manage to do a small series with a kimono top I had made to try and calm my nerves (which I wasn't happy with the lighting):
Sci-fi Geisha 1 by kirilee Sci-fi Geisha 16 by kirilee Sci-fi Geisha 17 by kirilee

June started with me trying to relax and get myself back into good health from the events of late May. It started with a trip down south with Terry and my folks where I took some photos of non-human things:

Then I got cracking with stock - reshooting the sci-fi geisha series on white:
Tannalein 1 by kirilee Sci-fi Geisha 29 by kirilee Sci-fi Geisha 42 by kirilee Sci-fi Geisha 41 by kirilee

And I got my first commission to make someone else a dress. I though I would play around with some stock whilst I was at it:
Donella 1 by kirilee Donella Blooper by kirilee Donella 13 by kirilee

For most of July, I was sewing. And applying for jobs. Lots of jobs. I finished off TWO ball gowns, went to a ball, and opened my Etsy store: Scrap Epic.
In short, my create mojo was truly coming back! Though, no stock really except for some of Luna.
Australian Cattle Dog 12 by kirilee

I was back into the swing of things, and even got a casual contract working for a local government for about two months. It was awesome and restored my faith in the working community. But I also felt like I was in a good place to do stock again... and start addressing the weight I had gained over the last two years due to the stresses of work and other issues :P ALSO! Our slab went down on our house! HUZZAH!

September was the best month of my life, because on of the most important things happened in my life to day. Yes, I was losing weight, yes, our house was getting built... but I was not expecting it. Terry proposed to me in such a romantic fashion I simply could not stop saying yes. (and FYI, there are some girls that when they cry in happiness look so graceful and beautiful. I looked more like a red ball of goo that had drunk 3 cans of red bull.)

I began by answering some of your questions in a youtube video - which was SUPER fun! I also got a long term contract position with another great company. I was also starting to feel better about myself and my body. I was feeling like my old self again - and it just kept on getting better. Like... winning a DD!

By the time December hit, I couldn't be happier. Terry and my house is in lock up stage, with walls, doors, roof... even cupboards! And we are told it will be in February that we will have the keys handed over to us. I also hit my 10kg milestone of weight loss (and still counting). The Christmas season is upon us and although my job was going well... I got offer a full time permanent position with another company starting early January with a team that seem very friendly. I am the most positive I have been in a LONG time. And feel better than I have in years!

So, what else is new? WELL, I have some news on the Epic Dress and Comic Con!

Victorian Ball Gown (semi) Epic Dress
Untitled by kirilee
I would like to thank everyone for their input into what they thought I should do with the blue dress that I recently posted. After your comments, I have decided to make a Victorian-esk Ball Gown over these holidays. And here is the twist - I will be making this epic dress utilising materials, patterns and finishings from items I already have or donated to me by others. The only thing I have needed to buy has been the iDye Poly and the elastic. All up, $15 worth. It is a true Scrap Epic dress.
(Dress made by Nan for my mum given to me 40 years later, petticoat is a wedding dress skirt, cream chiffon left over from the Forest Queen series, white lining given to me by my friend's nan, tulle given to me by a dressmaker who was getting rid of it, padding (not shown) given by Terry, and other bits were already in my collection).
I am VERY excited to get cracking in this one. I'm looking forward to trying to make a very decent bustle.

Comic Con Cosplay
Thank you everyone who suggested some ideas about who I should go as. I also asked on facebook. I have decided to Cosplay as the Tardis from Doctor Who!
Untitled by kirilee
Here is my material! My plan is to make a 1950 strapless dress with a VERY froffy skirt. Once again, this will be mostly made from materials I already have. SCRAP EPIC BABY!!!
I just need to wait for some bits to finish it off to arrive from the US, and buy a zipper and some boning. But... I have until March to complete this one so YAY!
(BTW, I am super excited about this one because I want to look AWESOME for my first Cosplay at a Comic Con. I can't wait to meet Amanda Tapping, Ryan Robbins, Robin Dunne, Corin Nemec, Billie Piper, Shannon Doherty, Holly Marie Combs and Brian Krause!)

Anyway, just wanted to thank all of your input for the two outfits :) You guys are awesome!!!

Be prepared for the epicness!!!!

Merry Christmas everyone - speak soon!

Epic Stock Dress update AND COMIC CON!

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 17, 2013, 11:30 PM

G'day everyone,

I need to to make this quick as I am at work. *giggle*

Firstly, thank you all so much for all the ideas that you have given me in regards to the next epic dress I am going to make. I have decided to make a victorian inspired ball gown. And for an extra twist... I am going to do it scrap epic style. AKA. 90% of the materials must come already from my stash or donated by others. I have a cool idea which means I only need to by some elastic and some dye. Everything else, I think I have or have access too. Maybe I can do this challenge for under $20.

I am pretty certain I will be going to Comic Con next year in March. (yes... moving house, being stress +) But I have a GOOD reason. Amanda Tapping, AKA. Sam Carter from Stargate and Helen Magnus from Sanctuary, is COMING TO PERTH! *hyperventalates*

Amanda Tapping was my childhood/ teenage hero... and I admire her to this day. Not only for being an actor, but also a writer, producer, director, philanthropist, mother and wife. She was the person who inspired me to get into the arts because she proved that you could have a "normal" life along with being an actor... and still be the type of person who is heavily involved with charity.

It is a dream of mine to meet her.

SO! In true comic con fashion, I want to go as a character. Though I have NOOOO idea what costume to do. So... GO! You guys know what I look like and what I can do. Tell me your thoughts!

I need your input - Creation of a Semi Epic Dress

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 13, 2013, 5:12 PM

G'day everyone,

Right, Christmas is coming up and we ALL know what that means. Holidays. *squee*

This holidays, I would like to do some stock, and create a (semi) Epic Dress, with the base of it being a dress that my grandmother made for my mum about 35-40 years ago (pretty cool hey?).
Here is a picture of it:
Bluedress by kirilee

As you probably can tell from the length of the dress (which my mum used to wear with 6 inch spiked heels), I'm a *little* bit taller than my mum. The dress as it is comes just above my ankles, which is a little too short. I can lengthen it slightly, but even so... I don't think it would make much difference.

So... now I want your input. How should I turn this basic dress into a (semi) epic dress? What would you like to see?
Ideally... I would like to try an keep the dress from being cut because of sentimental value... maybe one day I can give it to my daughter (who will be even taller than me and will no doubt make it a summer dress :P)

The colour is a light blue and the material has a slight shine to it (like a very VERY fine velvet). The bottom of the dress is an A-line (not a full circle). It also has a small amount of detail on the shoulders (like a loop of material)

Ok... GO! Fill me with inspiration! (And give me photos to explain wherever possible :P)

And FWI - you can still put your name down and go into the draw to win a free Christmas Gift made by me. More details can be found in this journal: Christmas Gift - reminder!G'day everyone!
I thought I would remind everyone about the free Christmas gift I will be giving away. Don't forget to sign up for your chance... pretty good odds. Just saying :)
